Government Health Insurance Programs

In the U.S., one of the largest health insurance providers is the federal government. There are numerous government health insurance programs that assist citizens of all ages. These programs are considered public programs rather than private insurance programs. The people covered by these government health insurance programs must often meet specific criteria and qualifications before their applications are approved. Let's examine some of the government health insurance plans.

Medicare is one of the largest government health insurance programs. Most citizens are automatically enrolled in a Medicare government health insurance plan when they reach the age of 65 years. People not meeting that requirement must make special application. For example, people with certain illnesses and disabilities can apply for this government health insurance policy.

Medicaid is a government health insurance plan available to low income families and individuals. These persons must fit into eligibility groups that are recognized by both state and federal laws. The Medicaid government health insurance program sends money directly to the health care providers. It does not reimburse individuals directly. Some states require Medicaid members to pay a small co-payment with each visit to a health care professional. This is a state government health insurance system.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a government health insurance program jointly sponsored by federal and state governments. Families that earn too much each year to be eligible for Medicaid might be able to qualify for the SCHIP government health insurance program. This plan provides medical insurance to children of low income families that meet certain eligibility requirements. Premiums for this government health insurance policy vary by number of children enrolled per family, income, and other items.

From the elderly to the children, government health insurance plans can cover almost anybody. Disabled individuals or those with certain illnesses can benefit too. Some of these plans are free, while others require you to pay premiums. Don't forget government health insurance options when you are considering your insurance needs.
