Short Term Health Insurance Gets You Through The Tough Times

The term "short term health insurance" is pretty self explanatory. It is health insurance for a short period of time. Insurance buyers tend to buy and use medical insurance over long periods, such as their lifetime! However, there are times when short term health insurance is the best option. These times may deal with changes of employment, money problems, or those just starting life on their own. Whatever the situation, you should be able to find a suitable short term health insurance policy.

Short term health insurance doesn't always have to mean that the insured gets the lowest coverage available. These policies are designed for short periods of time, sometimes for only several months. The benefits may be very good, but the buyer needs to discuss the exact policy prices and benefits before purchasing any short term health insurance policy.

College students and recent graduates may wish to investigate the benefits of short term health insurance. These students are about to leave their parents' medical insurance plan, and don't have a job yet. Employers often offer employee health insurance for free or at reduced rates, but the recent graduate cannot take advantage of that free coverage until he or she is hired. In that period between graduation and being hired, short term health insurance can cover basic medical needs that the student might have.

Unemployment is another situation in which short term health insurance might be the best option. In the U.S., companies that meet certain qualifications are required to offer a laid off employee continuing health insurance coverage under the federal COBRA program. The ex-employee will be required to pay the insurance premiums himself, but will have the same benefits as the current employees. If that federal coverage is not available, short term health insurance is the answer. It can provide minimum medical coverage while the employee is between jobs.

People with financial problems might be able to utilize short term health insurance until their situation changes. Perhaps they have just lost a job, been fired, or had a financial emergency. If they talk to their insurance agent, they might be able to take advantage of the lower costs of short term medical insurance until they can resume their lives and seek normal coverage again.

It is important to maintain some kind of medical insurance at all times. You can't anticipate an emergency, but you can prepare for one. Short term health insurance fills the coverage gaps in your life.
